Roy Lichtenstein’s best auction records –

Andy Warhol, the most prominent pop artist, rarely felt humiliated. But, when he came before Roy Lichtenstein’s early works, Warhol abandoned his own experiments with superhero images from comics. As Warhol told curator Henry Geldzahler, “Roy did comics so well.”

Many others were also impressed with Lichtenstein’s works, which often take the form of comic book-like images with Ben-Day dots left visible. In the market, Lichtenstein is raining like one of the most expensive pop artists in the market.

Perhaps the most expensive Lichtenstein of all time is his 1962 painting Masterpiece, which once belonged to Agnes Gund. Steven Cohen allegedly gave him $ 165 million in 2017 in a private sale; Gund then used the money to fund a new initiative focused on mass incarceration, criminal justice and the arts. Public auctions of Lichtenstein’s work have so far not reached this figure. Yet the artist’s top ten auction records establish him as one of the top-selling artists and a market indicator.

Records continue to rise for the master of pop. Last July, Lichtenstein’s Nude with joyful painting (1994), which portrays a fitting blonde heroine from a DC comic book series, sold at Christie’s for $ 46.2 million. The result made it the third highest price paid for a work by the artist at auction.

Below is a list of the artists’ best public sales.
