Aumann Auctions recently sold a 1913 Case 30-60 for $1,470,000 to break the world record. This not only makes it the most expensive antique tractor ever sold, but also the most expensive tractor ever sold. By comparison, the most expensive modern tractor, the Case IH Quadtrac, costs around $600,000. The 1913 Case 30-60 was sold to an undisclosed bidder on April 21 at Aumann Auctions’ annual Pre-30 online auction.

“The 1913 Case 30-60 is one of only five known of the original 500 built to still exist, and the first gas-powered tractor model built by the JI Case Company,” says auctioneer Kurt Aumann. “The other four are immobilized in private and museum collections, and this one will be carefully delivered to a private collection in the North East.”

The previous record for the most expensive antique tractor sold was a 1910 Marshall Colonial Class C tractor for $535,000, which was sold in April 2019 by Aumann Auctions.

“Scarcity and demand determine the prices of these vintage tractors,” says Aumann. “Then there is the historical significance of the tractor being the first gas-powered tractor model built by Case,” he adds.

New collectors enter the tractor hobby each year as new interest grows in these historically significant pieces. As demand for these early, low-production tractors increases, prices will follow.

Now known as CASE IH, the JI Case company founded in 1842 started out building threshing machines before becoming a leader in steam power. As Case predicted that the new internal combustion engine would take over steam power on the farm, in the early 1900s he began experimenting with gas engines. In 1910, Case released its first gasoline-powered tractor, The Case 60. In 1913, this tractor reportedly cost around $2,500; today it would cost nearly $72,000 after adjusting for inflation.

The pre-’30 auction was launched in 2017 by Aumann Vintage Power. Kurt Aumann, auctioneer and owner of Aumann Auctions Inc., saw the need for a standalone event for collectors to showcase, buy and sell the first pieces of our agricultural past.

Since 1962, Aumann Auctions has provided auction services for sellers across the country and overseas. They hold over 200 live and online auctions a year, including antique tractors and memorabilia, farm toys, farmland, real estate, business liquidations, and personal property and estates. Aumann Auctions is a member of the MarkNet Alliance, a network of international auction companies that hold nearly 6,000 auctions and sell over $1 billion in assets annually.
