Steve Kirsch has many professions: race instructor, test driver, drifter, race cab driver and first of all a passionate motorsports athlete. We met him for an interview.
Let’s take a quick look back on the previous season. You came third in the overall ranking. Is that the maximum achievement and what are your plans for 2014?
Kirsch, Steve: The last season 2013 was indeed a good one for me. Nevertheless I would have liked to end up more often on the podium. I am satisfied with the third position overall but I do hope that there is more to achieve this year.
I am highly motivated since I have the opportunity to be active in motorsports and I don’t take that for granted. I am having so much fun fighting on the circuit and I simply enjoy it. However, I want to be successful – in 2014 as well!
Although you probably enjoy driving on every circuit, do you still have preferences?
Kirsch, Steve: Of course I do! I am especially looking forward to two races: The ones in Zandvoort and at the Sachsenring. There is also a simple reason to it: 2007 I came champion in the Suzuki Swift Cup Holland in Zandvoort and therefore I have a special relationship with the circuit in the dunes.
The race at the Sachsenring is my home event and that is why I am always excited to be driving there, even though the pressure is a lot higher.
Especially this year as it will be our last race of the season. But that is also what makes it so appealing. I have to handle the pressure and apart from that there is nothing better than driving in front of friends, family and sponsors.
We now know the perfect circuit for you. What would be the perfect moment for you on the circuit?
Kirsch, Steve: That would be the moment when I am crossing the finish line. It is not easy to describe but this feeling of having beaten the others – there is hardly anything better.
One hears about different spleens being maintained in the paddock. Do you have any special habits?
Kirsch, Steve: I would not call it a spleen but I never start driving until I have caressed once more the dashboard of my Mini.
Up to now, you have been driving different touring cars, what is it about the Mini that fascinates you?
Kirsch, Steve: The MINI is and will remain a cult: It is very interesting to see how attractive this small vehicle is. It appeals to a lot of people and is therefore very good for acquiring partners and sponsors. Although I have been driving a lot of different and also bigger and faster touring cars, but the MINI is special to me.
Most of the time, it is underestimated and we have proved over the last few years that it is possible to do great motorsports with “the little one” as well.
Which question do you ask yourself concerning motorsports?
Kirsch, Steve: Sometimes I ask myself why it is me who is allowed to be active in motorsports. I get the answer every time when I am on the top of the podium!
The last word is yours, is there something you would like your fans to know?
Kirsch, Steve: I am very much looking forward to the new challenge in the DTC/ADAC PROCAR and I wish that our fans would continue supporting us just as they did last year and we will take care of the rest on the circuit.
