Want to get out of your house this summer but not too far from Charlotte? We get it, gas prices are expensive these days. Here’s an idea: take a train ride to Greensboro and immerse yourself in the city’s rich history and culture. (If you have kids, they can ride Amtrak for $5 this summer!)

Pro tip: You can even stay at an AirBnB designed by an HGTV host.

I’ve compiled a list of things to do in Greensboro, starting with brunch and ending with a relaxing stop at the bar:

Brunch in Greensboro

Carolina dinner

Location: 5605 W Friendly Ave Ste E, Greensboro, NC 27410 and 520 S Regional Road, Greensboro, NC 27409

Carolina’s Diner serves classic dishes like its homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and baked spaghetti. It is open 24 hours a day most days (the restaurant closes at 6 p.m. on Sundays and reopens at 6 a.m. on Mondays). Its low prices and large portions are a hit with locals and tourists alike.

Southern scrambled dinner

Location: 2417 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro, NC, 27403

The Scrambled Southern Diner, located in the heart of historic Lindley Park, serves breakfast and lunch all day from 11 a.m. Be sure to try the restaurant’s house specialties like cookies and gravy, fried green tomatoes, and shrimp and grits, all made with ingredients sourced from local farmers and North Carolina artisans.

Museums in Greensboro

Greensboro History Museum

Location: 130 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC 27401

After breakfast, stop at the Greensboro History Museum, where you can learn about the city’s history. Admission is free, and you can browse the museum’s NC Democracy, Voices of a City, and Welcome to the Gate City exhibits.

Weatherspoon Museum of Art

Location: 500 Tate Street, Greensboro, NC 27402

The Weatherspoon Art Museum is located at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. Explore its vast collection of modern and contemporary art, considered one of the best in the Southeast.

Are you a fan of video games and Japanese Otaku culture? Lost Ark Games has the largest collection of Bandai model kits in North Carolina and has an extensive collection of Otaku collectibles. Don’t skip the arcade full of classic games like Street Fighter, Metal Slug and Tetris. Before leaving, treat yourself to its stock of video games for classic consoles such as NES, Game Boy and Nintendo 64.

Safari Nation

Location: 3900-H W. Market St., Greensboro, NC 27407

After lunch, take the little ones to Safari Nation, where they can safely burn off energy while you relax on the fringes of the indoor entertainment center. The jungle gym, bumper cars, zipline and playground will ensure the fun never ends.
