Strauss & Co ends the year on a high note with an online-only auction – Part 1

Strauss & Co closes 2021 on a positive note with its online auction only in November.

“The end-of-year sale was divided into three parts, with conclusions spread over three consecutive days, to do justice to the exceptional shipment of works on offer,” says Susie Goodman, executive director of Strauss & Co. “ This decision also allows us to better profile our collaborating partners and sole proprietorship collections. “

The sale offers something for all tastes, budgets and whims – from perennial favorites like William Kentridge and JH Pierneef to impressionist landscapes by Hugo Naudé and lyrical watercolors by Namibian Adolph Jentsch.

The demand for indigenous ceramics is strong. After two successful auctions this year of South African ceramics, including the Juanita Bird Collection of Linn Ware and other 20th century ceramics, collectors will be excited about the other examples offered by Linn Ware Studios, Ceramic Studio, Globe and Hamburger Pottery. If your tastes turn to the most flamboyant, there is also a Roberto Cavalli table service with an “Animal” motif that goes under the hammer.

Other treasures include a hand-woven mohair rug from Royal Lesotho Tapestry Weavers, skillful botanical and bird paintings from the RMB collection, and a beautiful Edwardian rattan high chair and cradle from the Goede Hoop Estate, for those who might expect the sound of little feet soon.

As we all prepare to relax and spend some quality time with family and friends, why not scroll through the incredible works that Strauss & Co has for auction?

November online, part I – works on paper; Impressions and multiples; Books, portfolios and sculptures

Sessions 1 to 3.

8:00 am Monday 22 November 2021 → 8:00 p.m. Sunday November 28, 2021

Session 1: works on paper

Namibian artist Adolph Jentsch is the iconic, evocative and beloved painter of the Namibian landscape. Two watercolors by the artist go under the hammer during the first session.

In Lot 73, Landscape with low bushes (watercolor on paper, estimate R10,000 – 15,000), the artist uses delicate brushstrokes in a pointillist style to represent the characteristic vegetation of the Namibian landscape. Lot 90, South West Africa (watercolor on paper, estimate R8,000 – 12,000) shows a more verdant Namibian summer landscape, punctuated by a solitary acacia tree in the distance.

Session 2: Prints and Multiples

Sam Nhlengethwa is best known for his paintings and collages that explore themes of social history and art, jazz, mining, and domestic life. Dear Ella Fitzgerald (color lithograph on paper, estimate R18,000 – 24,000) is a visual tribute to the ‘First Lady of Song’ and ‘Queen of Jazz’, Ella Fitzgerald. Like Fitzgerald and his music, the artwork vibrates with dynamism and spontaneity. “Painting jazz literally allows me to put color on those vocal colors,” the artist said in an interview with Arthrob.

“There are several exceptional works on paper in this auction,” says Wilhelm van Rensburg, Senior Art Specialist at Strauss & Co, whose extensive knowledge of the various print media stems from his long association with the highly regarded gallery Johannesburg Art on Paper. . “They include a very old and rare linocut series by Norman Catherine, Scenes with abstract figures (estimate R10,000 – 15,000), executed while an art student at East London Technical College under the supervision of Jack Lugg.

Session 3: Books, Portfolios and Sculpture

South African sculptor Julius Napaqu Mfethe comes from a long line of talented craftsmen – his father and two brothers were specialist weavers. Mfethe used his formidable powers of observation to create small, delicate, smooth-surfaced, finely-detailed sculptures depicting the lives of the people and animals around him.

Wood sculpture Vierspan Ploeg (estimate R 50,000 – 70,000) is a magnificent sculpted plow scene with two men and four oxen. The sculpture shows Mfethe’s unique skill and attention to the smallest detail, from the delicate braiding of the farmer’s whip to the intricate carvings on men’s shoes and the tiny bolts of the plow.
