Bellagio in Vegas showing 11 works by Pablo Picasso ahead of auction

Eleven works of art by Pablo Picasso will be on display Friday and Saturday at a Las Vegas Strip complex, ahead of an auction at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art which Sotheby’s estimates could fetch $ 100 million.

The nine paintings and two ceramic pieces had been on display inside the Bellagio’s Picasso restaurant until owner MGM Resorts decided earlier this year to sell them.

“I’m so used to seeing them in the restaurant, it really changes the dynamic of the work to see them here inside the gallery,” said Tarissa Tiberti, Executive Director of Arts and Culture at MGM Resorts, at the Las Vegas Sun.

“It’s interesting and fun to see them in this setting. It’s amazing that the Bellagio has exhibited them for over 20 years to be seen by the public, ”she said.

The free show, titled “Picasso: Masterpieces from the MGM Resorts Fine Art Collection,” is open 10 am to 6 pm Friday and 10 am to 2 pm Saturday.

Sotheby’s estimates that two of the paintings are worth up to $ 30 million.

One, a colored oil and enamel on canvas entitled “Man and Child”, was created in 1969.

The other, “Woman with a red-orange beret”, is perhaps the jewel of the collection. She represents Picasso’s lover and frequent muse, Marie-Thérèse Walter, and was last auctioned off in the 1980s for around $ 900,000.

It was acquired by casino mogul Steve Wynn in 1998 and became the property of MGM Resorts when the company purchased The Mirage complex in Wynn.

Sotheby’s auctions are usually held in places such as New York, London, Paris, Milan and Hong Kong. The Saturday night event will be a first major event in Las Vegas.

“As one of the most famous, loved and accomplished artists of all time, we couldn’t imagine anyone better than Picasso to usher in this unique artistic and cultural experience,” said Brooke Lampley, President and Sotheby’s Sales Director for Global Fine Arts. in a report.

During more than 70 years as an active artist, Picasso is said to have created more than 13,000 paintings.

Tiberti said she believed he would always be important.

“He’s made a lot of breakthroughs,” she said. “He’s pioneered a lot of ways and done a lot of work. Much like Monet and van Gogh, much of Picasso’s imagery is used over and over again, although the general public may not even know it. “

MGM Resorts plans to reshape its public art portfolio to deepen its focus on diversity and inclusion, it said in a statement.

“We are committed to creating an even more inclusive collection that maintains the breadth of our existing portfolio while giving a greater voice to artists from under-represented communities,” said Ari Kastrati, director of hospitality for the company. .
