Orlando Sentinel ANDRESS partment. When her two daughters went off to college, Mary Andress who taught herself higher math began tutoring neighboring kids in algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Word of her success spread, her daughter said. In the '60s, at the height of the Cold War, she taught herself Russian. "She dug right in and worked hard at it," Andress said.

"She could read it and understood the grammar and vocabulary." So what prompted a quiet but friendly woman to tackle such daunting projects? "I think it was curiosity," her daughter said. "She was always curious. She had a very active mind." Mary Andress also is survived by another daughter, Marjorie Bayes of Denver; and two grandsons. By SANDRA MATHERS SENTINEL STAFF WRITER Not many women could boast of singing in the same church choir for 60 years or logging 30,000 volunteer hours at the same hospital. Mary Nixon Andress of Lees-burg accomplished those feats and several others before she died Thursday at 97. She was just 19 when she graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in philosophy. But the city girl with the inquisitive mind packed up her degree, along with her possessions, when her husband decided on impulse to quit his job at Montgomery Ward and move to pre-World War II Florida. Allan and Mary Andress arrived in Leesburg in 194 1 For the next 40 years, they owned and operated a citrus grove on Silver Lake.

She kept the books. But that wasn't enough for Mary Andress. She started singing at Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg in her 30s. She didn't quit until she was 92, then was she was on a walker and couldn't get up the steps to the choir loft." It was a small choir when Mary Andress joined. She sometimes directed the choir and played the organ.

She also helped pick out a new organ for the church and had a hand in hiring several choir directors through the years. She helped hire Tom DeWitt about 30 years ago. He will play the organ at her memorial service Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the church. When she wasn't at choir practice, Mary Andress was volunteering several days a week at Lake Regional Medical Center.

She spent most of her 30,000 hours in the medical-records de REED, JOHN 781910 to 3262005. Don't weep for me. I arrived in Heaven recently, angels brought me here. I am having a grand reunion with friends and loved ones dear. John lived part of his life in WV, part in MN, leaving the best part for FL.

He was a retired employee of the Kennedy Space Program. By RICK MAESE SENTINEL STAFF WRITER A week after he stunned hospital personnel and emerged from a near-comatose state, doctors say Rob Graham has a chance for a successful recovery, their hopes boosted by an MRI test this week that showed no signs of brain loss or stroke. Graham, 33, is the boys basketball coach at Bishop Moore High School who suffered cardiac arrest in the opening minutes of a basketball game Feb. 19. He was resuscitated on the court but spent the next 35 days in a near-coma. He was unresponsive and showed no signs of consciousness until March 25.

This week's MRI was the first evidence that allowed doctors to assess the extent of was admitted to the hospital, Graham has suffered a series of seizures, which doctors thought might be strokes. "I think Rob has a great hope for some recovery," said Guzzi. "We just don't know how much." On Friday, Graham's family and his doctor met with a group of reporters for the first time since the coach regained consciousness. Guzzi said doctors were "stunned" and called Graham's recovery "dramatic and remarkable." Graham's wife, Tammy, was in the room when she saw her husband start to cry. "It was an unbelievable moment, just as special as when we had our baby," she said Friday.

Despite recent successes, Guzzi warned that rehabilitation is a slow process and progress shouldn't be measured in days and weeks. "Think of months as stepping stones," he said. Rick Maese can be reached at rmaeseorlandosentinel.com. damage to Graham's brain. "It was benign looking," Dr.

Lou Guzzi, one of the coach's attending physicians, said Friday. In the past seven days, doctors and family members say that Graham continues to exhibit increased levels of responsiveness and understanding. He smiles when prompted, has limited use of his hands, can wiggle his toes and has spoken a few words. "Every day he's getting better," Guzzi said. Doctors hope to install a defibrillator inside of Graham on Monday, which will allow him to begin a more rigorous rehabilitation program.

Family members are hopeful that Graham's insurance carrier allows him to remain at Florida Hospital Orlando for this process. The path to recovery is a long one. Doctors say the MRI scan doesn't predict how healthy Graham might be. They are encouraged, though, because the coach won't be facing some of the obstacles that doctors had feared.
