PUBLISHER a word from your t is with great pleasure that we extend our congratulations to Mayor Teresa Heitmann on her hard-fought re-election to the position of mayor of the city of Naples. Just twenty-two votes separated Teresa from her opponent Gary Price in the closest election Naples has ever seen. It's clear from the closeness of this election that voting is one of our most important constitutional rights, regardless of whether it's a local or national election. Teresa's reelection shows that every vote counts, and that it is important to take the time to make your voice heard. We would also like to congratulate Berne Barton, Bill Kramer, and Linda Penniman on their Naples City Council wins. With many of our seasonal residents having returned home or soon leaving, it is an ideal time to take advantage of once again being able to visit your favorite restaurant without having to make an advanced reservation or long wait times. It's now time for off-season specials, happy hours without elbow-toelbow crowding, and maybe you'll even get front-row parking. Take this opportunity to explore new places and try something new. Take advantage of lower prices and a more relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy the slower pace and make the most of these summer months before the hustle and bustle of the season returns. Joel Kessler I

8 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 One of the biggest thrills of my job is developing confidence in children and watching as they progress through life. Sometimes it’s the little things, like a photo, that remind us how far we have come. This spring, 56 children, from various elementary and middle schools, capped off twelve weeks of musical theater training at Naples Performing Arts Center (NPAC) with four performances of Beauty and the Beast Jr. Photos from proud parents circulated on social media and one caught my eye. It showed three current sixth graders—Celie Dockweiler, Aniston Gerry, and Ruthie Grossman—on stage together from NPAC’s production of Beauty and the Beast Jr. in 2016. From Pre-K to pre-teens, I marvel at how they have grown! When I asked each of the three families to explain what NPAC has meant to them, one common theme appeared: instilling confidence. “Each [musical] that Celie has performed in truly teaches a lesson, not only in the script but also from positive feedback, collaboration, and support from her teachers, directors, and peers,” explained Heather Dockweiler, who uses Instagram to archive her daughter’s experiences at NPAC. Another of our longtime supporters added, “Over the years, Aniston has gone from a quiet, timid, and shy girl, to trying out for lead roles,” Ashley Gerry wrote to me. “You nurture their confidence to believe in themselves. You make it your mission to foster self-love and confidence as well as supporting and showing kindness to others. I am so grateful to have had NPAC as a part of her life while growing into a well-rounded, self-assured child.” “If you love what you are doing, don’t stop,” said sixth grader Ruthie Grossman. “It doesn’t matter what role you have, it’s so fun to be a part of. Never give up on your dreams!” Our education spaces for private and group instruction take place at the YMCA of Collier County. One mile away at the Community School of Naples is where our large musical theater performances take place. We welcome anyone in the community to volunteer, purchase tickets to see these amazingly talented students shine on stage, and donate to NPAC so more students may participate in the arts and develop life skills. Since I founded NPAC in 2012, we have grown to become the place parents turn to for performing arts education. Musical theater education, from elementary through high school age, is our forte with cast lists routinely topping fifty students; however, it’s not about the numbers, and it’s certainly not just about shows. NPAC’s core mission fosters creativity, builds self-esteem, and develops a love for the arts. We are here to be an extended ‘family’ as evidenced by the three girls who have come full circle with me in Beauty and the Beast Jr. Be our guest and see the impact yourself. 20 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 LORNA FEDELEM, MD NATIONAL BLOOD PRESSURE MONTH Call and schedule a complimentary meet and greet with Dr. Fedelem. 9150 Galleria Ct., Suite 200, Naples, FL 34109 | LornaFedelemMD.com | 239.580.6390 Knowing your blood pressure is key. High blood pressure affects one in three Americans — and it’s the third leading cause of death in the U.S. This May, celebrate National Blood Pressure Month by raising your awareness with the power of information. Then, use that knowledge to fight unseen, potential risks. Due to a tendency to show either minor or even no symptoms at all, high blood pressure has earned the nickname “the silent killer.” Knowledge of one’s high blood pressure — and then taking action — greatly reduces the possible risks of related health problems. DOCTOR’S ORDERS… 1. Check your blood pressure 120-130 for the top number and 75- 80 for the bottom number is considered the range for normal blood pressure. Any higher than that means you should try to lower it through some simple lifestyle changes like diet and exercise and go see your doctor. You could also need medication. 2. Get moving One of the best ways to maintain healthy blood pressure is through exercise. Moving your body naturally with a walk, bike ride, swim, jog, or any other aerobic activity will help keep your blood pressure low, and your body healthy. 3. Adjust your diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products, while avoiding sodium, saturated fat, and cholesterol, can lower your blood pressure significantly. National Blood Pressure Month is a good time to practice. WHY CONTROLLING YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IS IMPORTANT 1. It encourages shedding a few pounds Weight loss is one of the most effective lifestyle changes you can make to control high blood pressure. Losing even a small amount of weight can help reduce your numbers (and risk) significantly. 2. It promotes activity Regular physical activity and exercise can greatly lower your blood pressure. Simply walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or dancing for 30 minutes most days of the week can help keep your blood pressure at a healthy level. 3. It lowers heart attack and stroke risk Having high blood pressure puts you at significant risk of having a heart attack or stroke. It can also cause congestive heart failure and kidney dysfunction, all while you feel completely normal. Once the damage is done it is hard to recover from. That is why hypertension is called the silent killer. Make an appointment today to have your blood pressure checked by your primary care doctor!

22 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 CHAD OLIVER Chief Communication Officer Collier County Public Schools NEW HOUSING SURVEY REVEALS REALITIES Access to housing and the overall cost of living have long been issues in Collier County, but not to this extent. Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) now has survey data to prove the importance of the issue. For two weeks in March, we shared an anonymous survey with all District employees, instructional and noninstructional. Approximately 3,500 CCPS employees took time to complete it. WHERE CCPS STAFF LIVES Eighty-one percent of our survey respondents live in Collier County and 18% drive into a CCPS work site from Lee County. The remaining one percent live in other counties, and several drive from Florida’s east coast each day. When asked about their current situation, 65% own their home, while 25% rent and are at the mercy of rental spikes seen statewide since the pandemic. According to the apartment search engine Rent.com, the average monthly price for a one-bedroom in Naples is $1,910, and $2,350 for a two-bedroom. Hard to believe those prices have gone down year-to-year! Our survey revealed 275 of our staff have a stable place to live; however, it is with family or friends. For those that told us they do not have a stable place to live and provided their contact information, we are connecting them with potential community resources to assist. FEELINGS ABOUT THE FUTURE The survey revealed the issue of housing is top of mind for many who work in our public schools. Forty-five percent said they are concerned they will not have stable housing within the next year, and 80% of those respondents cited “cost” as the reason. Of the 3,500 district staff who took our survey, nearly two out of three expressed concern that the current costs of housing might force them to seek employment elsewhere in the future. RETAINING, RECRUITING, AND ADVOCATING Superintendent Dr. Leslie Ricciardelli explained to staff why their input was important. “Our school district has been asked to join the collaboration and

The information gathered from this survey will help provide a clearer reflection of our employees’ current housing situation.” CCPS Chief Human Resources Officer Valerie Wenrich shared the results of the CCPS Housing Survey during the public comment portion of the March 26, 2024, Board of County Commissioners meeting, where they voted to advance the development of essential housing at the former Golden Gate Golf Course. CCPS understands the concerns of our employees and is doing everything in our power to retain and recruit employees. This past year, the School Board passed a record increase for teacher compensation, representing a $26 million increase in salary expenses. Additionally, the School Board put out a request for proposals for essential housing development of 35 acres, owned by CCPS, adjacent to Manatee Elementary off U.S. 41. Results from the employee survey will help inform the next steps for the School Board on how that property may be used. Part of the school district’s role is to be both a collaborator and a connector. To that end, we maintain a housing webpage (collierschools.com/housing) for our staff to share opportunities from outside organizations, provide housing resources, and potential assistance. Housing is essential for our community providing public services, for our school district to continue to be an A-rated educational provider, and for sustaining the overall quality of life that makes Collier so desirable. Have a school district-related question or topic you’d like Chad to feature? Call 239.377.0185 or email [emailprotected]. CCPS Deputy Superintendent Darren Burkett updates School Board on Essential Housing. Val Wenrich advocates for essential housing at County Commission meeting.

Unfortunately, however, your home has been lingering on the market without an offer. There may be many reasons why a potential buyer has not made a love connection. Consider these five. #1: YOUR HOME IS OVERPRICED You love your home, and no one can appreciate its value quite like you. But when it comes to putting your property on the market, the right list price will position your home for a successful sale. While you may have your heart set on listing your property for a certain amount, it’s best to defer to the pricing structure recommended by your Realtor®. A Realtor® considers a number of factors when establishing a list price, including an evaluation of comparable homes for sale in your area, as well as sold homes, and a strategic marketing plan to arrive at a price that enables your property to compete with similar ones on the market. If your home has been lingering on the market without an offer, and you’ve been resistant to pricing recommendations by your Realtor®, it’s best to acquiesce and leave pricing to the pros. #2: THERE’S A SPECIFIC PROBLEM WITH THE CONDITION OF YOUR HOME For many homebuyers, concern about the price of a home comes second to its condition. After a showing, although you may not have received offers on your home, your Realtor® has the opportunity to get feedback about your residence from house hunters. Your agent can inquire about specific reasons why they passed up on your property. #3: A LACK OF STAGING Staged homes sell faster and for more money than ones that aren’t. So, if you’ve vacated your place, it’s not wise to leave it empty. Furnishings warm up your spaces and create an inviting atmosphere for buyers. It’s important to stage each room in a way that shows buyers how it can be used. Stage a spare bedroom as an office using a desk, chair and a bookshelf. Or as a fitness room using a yoga mat, a pair of free weights, and a large mirror leaned against a wall. It can be that simple. #4: DECOR THAT’S TOO SPECIFIC If you think that the look of your home doesn’t need any adjustments before you put it on the market, and that it’s ready for open houses and showings, you could be right. But, then again, you’re biased. After all, your home is furnished and decorated to suit your particular preferences. When your home is on the market, however, your interiors and exteriors should be designed to appeal to a wide range of buyers. Do your best to tone down your specific preferences in decor in order to appeal to a wider audience. #5: CLUTTER You should go through each room in your home and look for areas that need to be decluttered. This could be your kitchen counters, cabinets, and pantry, as well as bathroom counters and cabinets. And don’t forget your bedroom closets. Clutter there can give the appearance of insufficient storage, and ample closet space is a sticking point for a majority of homebuyers. DON’T WORRY If your head is spinning with thoughts about how to incorporate some of these suggestions, don’t worry. Your Realtor® has a professional pair of fresh eyes and can recommend what you need to take your home to the next level so that house hunters can see that it is a well-kept, spacious residence that’s the perfect fit for their families and futures.

32 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 Florida’s Marsy’s Law has been in the news since the Florida Supreme Court’s decision in November of 2023. Many of you that do not practice in the field of criminal law may not be familiar with Marsy’s Law, and the effects of the Florida Supreme Court’s decision. Marsy’s Law is named after Marsalee Nicholas, a college student in California who was stalked and murdered by her former boyfriend. Marsy’s parents were confronted by the accused murderer in a grocery store shortly after the murder. The family was not aware that the accused had been released and without any right to demand information about the case. As a result, the Marsy’s Law initiative began and was passed in California in 2008. Marsy’s Law was passed overwhelmingly in Florida in November of 2018. The law was passed as a Constitutional Amendment (Amendment 6) through a voter referendum. Its provisions are now embodied in Article I, Section 16 (b) – (e) of the Florida Constitution. Victims of crime in Florida are now guaranteed the rights found in its Constitutional provisions including the following: to be treated with dignity and respect, to be reasonably protected, to receive notice of and ability to be present at and heard at all public proceedings involving the criminal conduct; to notice of release and escape, and the right to privacy. The privacy right is specified to be the right to prevent disclosure of “information or records that could be used to locate or harass the victim or the victims’ family”. Art. I, Sect. 16 (b) (5), Fla. Const. As a result of this provision, law enforcement redacted police investigative reports and charges so that the victim or the victim’s family were not identified. Some law enforcement agencies have interpreted the Law, asserting that the law enforcement officers could themselves be victims of crimes and that the officers’ names were protected from disclosure by Marsy’s Law. One such expansion resulted in the case of the City of Tallahassee v. Florida Police Benevolent Assoc. Supreme Court of Florida, November 30, 2023, —So. d 3d— 2023 WL 8264181. In 2020, two Tallahassee police officers, in separate incidents, fatally shot armed suspects who were threatening them. The officers were cleared, and the City intended to report their names when the F.P.B.A. obtained an emergency injunction, asserting that Marsy’s Law should shield the officers’ identities. In a 6-0 decision the Florida Supreme Court ruled that Marsy’s Law could not be used to shield the identities of law enforcement officers involved in shooting cases. “Marsy’s Law guarantees to no victim – police officer or otherwise. – the categorical right to withhold his or her name from disclosure.” F.P.B.A, at 3. The Constitutional provision of Marsy’s Law protects “information or records that could be used to locate or harass the victim or the victim’s family…” F.P.B.A., at 9, quoting Art. I, Sect. 16 (b) (5) Fla. Const. “One’s name,” the Florida Supreme Court states, “is not that kind of information or record; it communicates nothing about where the individual can be found or bothered.” F.P.B.A., at 11. In contrast, other provisions of the State Constitution expressly address the disclosure of a person’s identity. See Art. Y, sect. 25 (b) Fla. Const. The Court’s decision resulted in limiting the scope of the protections to all persons. ABOUT THE COLLIER COUNTY CLERK OF THE CIRCUIT COURT AND COMPTROLLER Crystal K. 34 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 As much as we love Southwest Florida’s summers, by now we are really feeling the heat and while I am a big proponent of the very mild AC cooling (75-76° F), sometimes you just must chill a bit more. So, here are some useful holistic tips you can use this summer for AC-less heat relief. 1. GET FRIENDLY WITH ALOE VERA Most people only reach for aloe vera when they are totally sunburnt. However, research found that smoothing it on preemptively when you are starting to just feel overheated will yield great results. Aloe vera cream will lower skin and subdermal temperature on contact by as much as five degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, studies found that aloe penetrates the skin four times faster than water and reaches seven layers deep (while water reaches only the outer layer), so the cooling effect will last longer than taking a cold shower. 2. STICK WITH BLUE COLORS We generally think of white color as the most light-reflective. Thus, most summer SUMMER COOL The author of Diet Slave No More!, Svetlana Kogan, MD is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine, Holistic & Functional Medical Doctor with 25 years of experience. CustomLongevity.com | 239.676.6883 clothing collections are predominantly white. However, researchers have found that dying a white cotton shirt blue – boosts the garment’s UV light protection by 544% ensuring better defense against overheating and sunburn. Plus, color studies have shown that viewing the color blue causes body temperature to instantly drop by a few degrees, so looking at yourself in the mirror will boost the cooling effects. I have also used this in my meditative visualization sessions with patients when asking the patient to visualize their problem body area in blue color has a calming, soothing, and cooling effect on the way a person feels. This means that the cooling reaction to the color blue is really imprinted in our mind’s interpretation of this color on a whole different level. 3. SPICY FOODS CAN TRIGGER COOLING When you eat spicy food, your face will instantly start to sweat, and this will produce a cooling evaporative effect. Perhaps that is why spicy foods are so popular in tropical climates. Conversely, reaching for something like a bowl of ice cream, which is classically thought of as a summer treat – will cause a spike in sugar, forcing your metabolism to speed up to absorb it, and thus causing a spike in body temperature. So, make sure to add the following cooling spices to your DR. KOGAN Concierge Holistic & Functional Internal Medicine summer recipes: fennel, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, fenugreek seeds, coriander, and ginger. 4. KEEP A BEAUTIFUL INDOOR PLANT COLLECTION According to USDA estimates, a room full of indoor plants can lower air temperature by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The reason: plants go through a process called transpiration, in which they absorb warming carbon dioxide from the air and emit cooling water vapor. Even placing just a few potted plants in sunny rooms can lower the temperature by up to three degrees Fahrenheit. Interestingly, desert plants that are used to offset arid conditions conserve water during sunny hours and only transpire at night, so keep cacti or other desert plants in your bedroom. 5. FOOL YOURSELF COOL WITH MINT Scientists have long isolated a protein called TRPM8 responsible for making humans feel cold. It turns out that menthol also triggers our inborn TRPM8 receptors, triggering a cold feeling. So, if you are feeling hot, chew a stick of peppermint gum or spray on some cologne with mint in it, or rub on some mint-scented lotion to fool your brain into sending cooling signals to your skin.

38 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 BAKER SENIOR CENTER NAPLES MARKS MILESTONES IN CONNECTING OLD ADULTS Baker Senior Center Naples, a nonprofit organization that serves as the leading advocate for older adults in our community, is celebrating not one but two milestones during 2024. This year marks the 10th anniversary of when the senior center officially opened its doors, welcoming local seniors with a wide range of social activities aimed at combatting loneliness and isolation. The organization also is celebrating the oneyear anniversary of when it moved into its new, 30,000-square-foot permanent home located in North Naples. Originally founded as Naples Senior Center, Baker Senior Center Naples opened its doors on January 22, 2014 as the first senior center in Collier County. Located in a small rented space on Castello Drive, the senior center initially offered social programs and activities to just 80 initial seniors. Membership has since expanded to over 2,600. “When we first started, no one could have imagined the surge in the depth and scope of need for comprehensive senior services in this region. At the same time, there was little assistance available for older adults,” said Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, President/ CEO of Baker Senior Center Naples. “We are thrilled to observe both milestones and look forward to further providing confidence, connection and support to all seniors in our community.” Since its inception, Baker Senior Center Naples has evolved into the only human services agency of its kind, providing comprehensive “one-stop shop” services addressing the emotional and social needs of all adults over age 60 on Collier and southern Lee counties. All programs and services are provided by licensed and credentialed professionals. These include the Brookdale Cognitive Health Services, including Dementia Respite Groups and Caregiver Support; Geriatric Case Management and Senior Outreach Programs; and Mental Health Counseling as well as a “choice” Food Pantry. An average of 40 different social, educational and wellness programs also are offered each week thanks to a dedicated corps of over 200 trained and vetted volunteers. Among these programs are classes in art, music and film; brain fitness and educational seminars; courses in technology/computer science; physical well-being; and interest groups. In recent years, Baker Senior Center Naples has remained at the public forefront as a champion for local seniors. During the global pandemic, for example, the organization partnered with the Florida Department of Health in helping over 7,500 seniors get vaccinated against Covid-19. Many of these seniors lacked the technology needed to book an appointment with the state and had trouble obtaining the life-saving vaccine.

May/June/July 2024 North Naples News | 39 Once it became known that Baker Senior Center Naples was securing appointments for seniors, gated communities, civic groups and hospitals began referring seniors, and when the number of incoming calls exceeded capacity, the center added phone lines so staff and volunteers could help every older adult in the community who wanted it. The center also contracted with a home health care company to provide transportation when needed. More recently, Baker Senior Center Naples partnered with the Collier Community Foundation to help seniors in the recovery process after the devastation of Hurricane Ian. Older adults were especially hit hard by the September 2022 hurricane with limited financial resources or family members to assist them. Senior center staff and leadership worked with local seniors and connected them with the community resources they needed to rebuild their lives, particularly those living in lowincome areas of Collier County. Through the years, the senior center has experienced tremendous growth in the number of programs offered. To accommodate this and future growth, a new building has been built. Located at 6200 Autumn Oaks Lane, the new Baker Senior Center Naples replaces the formerly leased facilities that the organization had outgrown due to the region’s surging senior population. The new state-of-the-art building provides additional space for new and enhanced social services and activities for adults over the age of 60. The project was funded through a capital campaign that was launched in 2019 and was accelerated by a $11-million commitment from local philanthropists Patty and Jay Baker. For further details on Baker Senior Center Naples and its comprehensive programs and social services for seniors, call 239.325.4444 or visit bakerseniorcenternaples.org.

40 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 AN ANTIDOTE TO WAR A conversation with Artist Tatiana Rezvaya LEEZA ARKHANGELSKAYA Owner, East West Fine Art Fishing Time, Oil on canvas, 31.5 x 47

Tatiana Rezvaya’s artworks are exhibited at East West Fine Art in Mercato :: 9118 Strada Place, #8130 EastWestFineArt.com :: [emailprotected] UK-based artist Tatiana Rezvaya believes that art can be a means for peace. “Whether consciously or not, art has always been and is still a healer and educator of moral and spiritual health, and I feel we: artists, musicians, poets, and actors can also be included in this group who care and contribute to the health of the world.” Unfortunately, the world is still governed by money. While art is the territory of love and peace, it harbors the great power of creation: the antidote to the destructive power of war. Art knows no boundaries – it transcends cultural, religious, and socio-economic barriers. Understanding of the universal values of humanity: beauty, goodness, and virtue can be expressed through art. Art can help us understand other cultures and appreciate the beauty and fragility of our world. It's a worthy mission for art, to promote peace, and something that every artist can play her part in. Tatiana was born in 1943 in Kazakhstan during World War II. Her neighbors knew that Tatiana’s mother Klaudia was an artist. They would bring soldiers’ photographs of their family members begging her to draw portraits of their missing loved ones. For as long as she could remember, Tatiana watched her talented and passionate mother working with a brush in her hand. Observing and studying her surroundings, Tatiana began to draw from an early age. She was drawing for pleasure, but she did not intend for it to become her career. In her adult life, Tatiana worked as an interpreter and professor, but her hands were constantly drawing. She traveled extensively and gathered many impressions that she wanted to share not only with words. Tatiana then decided to go “back to school” and become a professional artist. Currently residing in London, UK, Tatiana’s paintings are in private collections in Ukraine, Russia, the UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, and Australia. 42 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 reviewed by anna karras n Boston, tucked between The Museum of Fine Arts and Simmons College is a small museum. Housed in a four-story mansion built in the style of a Venetian palazzo, its collection of art was carefully curated and displayed by a woman whose passion for art was unparalleled by her peers. Isabella Stewart Garner made it her life’s work to create this love story for the arts. Born in 1840 in New York, Isabella Stewart was one of four children of David and Adelia Stewart. Her father was an up-and-coming linen merchant with great wealth, and she lived a privileged childhood. When she was 15 the family moved to Paris partly so Isabella could attend a finishing school for American girls. During her time there she became friends with Julia Gardner, the child of a wealthy Boston Brahmin family. This connection led to her eventual marriage to John “Jack” Lowell Gardner. A bright and vivacious woman, Isabella was not well accepted by the insular and proper Boston society. Despite this, her greatest tragedy was losing her son to illness when he was almost two. Unable to have more children, she spent the rest of her life trying to find an outlet for her unspent love. Fortunately, their great wealth allowed the couple to travel extensively, which they did. First across Europe, and later to Egypt, Japan, China, and India. Everywhere they went Isabella threw herself with full force into her curiosity for different cultures and artistic traditions. At first, she collected memories in scrapbooks but began to dabble in real art collecting the further afield they went. By the waning years of the nineteenth century, she had enough art to create her very own museum. After the sudden death of Jack Gardner in 1898, Isabella took matters into her own hands. Building her mansion at 25 Evans Way, she created a space large enough to house the collection of art the couple had accumulated over two decades of travel. The museum opened in 1903 and to this day has not changed the installation of anything Isabella had so carefully put together. Natalie Dysktra’s new book is carefully researched and written in a narrative that is at once engaging and lush with detail. Isabella’s life, at times tragic and others enviable, is a brilliant testament to the will of the spirit. Dykstra was awarded the 2018 Public Scholar Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support her research for this book. This is a rich and rewarding biography not to be missed. ∞ EDITOR PROFILE A native Midwesterner, Dykstra studied Classics at the University of Wyoming and earned her Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Kansas. 44 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 BETTER TOGETHER HONORS COLLIER COUNTY COMMUNITY PARTNERS AT DOING GOOD RECEPTION Better Together, a nonprofit dedicated to families and children, recently honored Collier County community partners who have made a significant impact on the organization and its mission. “Our Better Together team is so grateful for the donors, volunteers, partners, and advocates who support us in fulfilling our mission of helping families overcome crisis,” said Megan Rose, CEO of Better Together. “These groups and individuals are the reason we are able to change lives and allow our community to flourish, and it was an honor to recognize many of them for their generosity and unwavering support this year.” Better Together recognized honorees for their impact during the reception held on February 20 at Grey Oaks Country Club in Naples. Honorees include: • Host Family of the Year was presented to Isaac and Abby Fuller for hosting a 4-year-old boy while his parents got treatment. In addition to providing him with a safe and loving home, they registered him for pre-K, potty trained him, and welcomed him like one of their own children. • Doug Campbell Generosity Award was presented to Moon Bae Chung for being a lifetime supporter of the Better Together mission and making sure no parent struggles alone. • Community Partner of the Year was presented to Project HELP Naples, with Vaneza Gonzalez accepting the award on behalf of the organization, for hosting an outreach event in Immokalee in 2023. Because of this partnership, Better Together was able to distribute diapers, wipes, and clothing for kids and provide additional resources to 20 families. • Church Partner of the Year was presented to Calvary Chapel Naples for its support of the Better Together mission. Pastor Aaron Lapp and the people of Calvary Chapel collected so many toys and gifts during Christmas that delivery required two trips. • Department of Children and Families Partner of the Year was presented to Daniel Ramos for going above and beyond for families, helping with referrals, transportation, and more. • Mentor of the Year was presented to Francine “Kip” Courtemanche for helping multiple parents navigate difficult seasons through Better Together Staff

With the help of donors and hundreds of volunteers and church communities, Better Together builds lasting support systems that help families cope with hardships – such as job loss, substance abuse, homelessness, and jail time – and ensures that children are cared for in a safe home until the family can be reunited. To date, the program has served over 9,000 children and kept 98% of families together, while helping 42,000 job seekers across 22 states find employment. With the proliferation of the Internet and digital technologies, our activities, preferences, accomplishments, and even our personal histories are increasingly stored in digital formats. This article explores the concept of a digital legacy, its importance, and practical steps for creating and managing one. UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL LEGACY A digital legacy refers to the digital information that an individual leaves behind after their death. This can include social media profiles, blogs, digital photographs, videos, online gaming profiles, and personal websites. It can also encompass email accounts, digital financial records, and any other form of digital content that may have significance to the deceased's loved ones or posterity. THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING A DIGITAL LEGACY The importance of creating a digital legacy cannot be overstated. For individuals, a well-managed digital legacy ensures that their stories, values, and memories are preserved for future generations. It offers a way for loved ones to remember and celebrate their life, providing a source of comfort and connection even after their passing. For historians and researchers, digital legacies offer invaluable insights into the cultural and social aspects of the current era. The collective digital footprints left behind by a generation can help future scholars understand the nuances of societal changes, communication evolution, and cultural shifts. STEPS TO CREATING A DIGITAL LEGACY 1. Inventory of Digital Assets The first step in creating a digital legacy is to make an inventory of all digital assets. This includes listing all social media accounts, blogs, digital storage accounts (like cloud storage), email accounts, and any other digital platforms where personal content is stored. 2. Decide What to Include Not all digital content may be worthy of being part of one's legacy. It's important to curate content that best represents an individual's life, values, and experiences. This might involve selecting significant photographs, meaningful communications, or creative works that showcase one's talents and interests. 3. Plan for Digital Estate Management Determining what should happen to these digital assets after one's death is a crucial part of legacy planning. This involves setting up a digital will or estate plan that outlines how each asset should be handled, who will be responsible for managing these assets, and what should be done with them. 4. Secure and Share Information Security is paramount when dealing with digital assets. Ensure that all sensitive information, including passwords and access instructions, is stored securely. Using a digital legacy service or entrusting a reliable individual with access to this information can be effective strategies. It’s essential to communicate your plans and instructions to someone you trust, who can execute your wishes regarding your digital legacy. 5. Regular Updates and Maintenance As digital assets and platforms evolve, so should your digital legacy plan. Regularly updating your inventory, revising your wishes, and ensuring that your designated digital executor has the latest information are critical steps in maintaining a relevant and accessible digital legacy. CONCLUSION Creating a digital legacy is a thoughtful process that requires careful consideration and planning. It’s about more than just preserving memories; it’s about ensuring that one's life story, achievements, and values continue to have an impact even after passing. By taking proactive steps to manage digital assets, individuals can leave behind a legacy that honors their lives and offers lasting value to future generations. IN THE DIGITAL WORLD

50 | North Naples News May/June/July 2024 The Miracle Mile project is a resident-led initiative started a year ago after the destruction of Hurricane Ian. It is a collaboration of residents and developers along the boulevard, Lowdermilk Park, neighborhood community associations, the Edgewater Hotel, and the Naples Beach Club, the future home of the Four Seasons Hotel. It is the stretch of Gulf Shore Boulevard North (GSBN) that runs from the Naples Beach Club to the Mooring Line Drive Bridge. This stretch of GSBN serves as a gateway to the entire city where many residents and tourists bike and walk along our beautiful beaches. The mission of the Miracle Mile project is to engage stakeholders in a collaborative approach to redevelop a key area in the city in a thoughtful and coordinated manner. The plan is to create and implement a streetscape that includes the following: 1. Retains and builds upon the unique character of Naples. 2. Implements improvements to resiliency/stormwater and underground utilities while remaining environmentally responsible. 3. Creates a cohesive and beautiful landscape in the public realm that residents value while enhancing the neighborhood and city. In case you missed the Naples Daily News articles and WINK News stories on the Miracle Mile project, on February 7 at the regular city council meeting over 140 Miracle Mile residents and all 38 developments on the Miracle Mile were represented. The Coquina Sands and the Moorings residents made their presence very clear that they are fully engaged about what is going to happen to the boulevard in their neighborhood. The decision was made that day for the approval of the funding for consultants, Agnoli, Barber & Brundage recently purchased by LJA, which is another fullservice local engineering consultancy firm, to move forward. LJA’s task is to create a conceptual master plan for the above-ground streetscape on the public right of way. The committee has already started meeting with the consultant and looks forward to sharing their progress thus far with residents. Right now, the consultant is working on developing a right-of-way base map of the boulevard and creating the Naples Miracle Mile website. A big part of our project is community engagement. We want to hear from our residents. The committee completed a survey last summer that was emailed out to residents by the Gulf Shore Property Owners, Moorings, and Coquina Sands Associations. There were 864 responses. Residents were asked what features are most important to them along the Miracle Mile. MORE THAN 90% OF RESIDENTS RANKED THE FOLLOWING AS THE TEN MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES: • underground utilities • sidewalks • traffic density • low building heights • green space • lush landscaping on private property • stormwater flooding on the road • views to the gulf and bay • building setbacks • pedestrian crosswalks • green space • verdant landscaping on public property The committee has met with residents and presented at neighborhood association meetings several times over the last year. They also plan on doing another survey in the future as well as creating additional in-person opportunities for residents to provide us with their further input about how they envision the future of the Miracle Mile. The reason why this neighborhood project has been so successful thus far is that all the stakeholders have been collaborative. Current long-time residents, developers, future residents of these new luxury developments, the city of Naples, and the many tourists that will visit our two hotels will all benefit from a more structurally sound, safer, and aesthetically cohesive Miracle Mile.
