It only requires a few simple ingredients and the gravy is ready in minutes.

If you are anything like me and have been intimidated by gravy, stress no more.

This year, I discovered that you can purchase an oven-ready turkey!

I found this one in the meat department at my grocery store: Whole Bird Oven-Ready Turkey. Not sponsored, just another great option!

It has already been rubbed with herbs and seasoning and all giblets have been removed prior to freezing.

It literally took me 5 minutes to get it in the oven.

When it was finished cooking, I removed it from the oven and used the leftover pan drippings to make this perfect gravy.

So, there are lots of options on how to get that those drippings!

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup flour (plus 1-2 Tablespoons more if needed)
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 cup drippings from cooked turkey (or chicken stock/broth)

Instructions

  • Remove drippings from roasting pan and pour through a strainer into a large bowl.

  • Let sit for about 3-5 minutes and remove any fat that moves to the top of the drippings.

  • To make this gravy, you are going to need about 4 cups of drippings. If you do not have four cups at this point, add enough chicken broth to make 4 cups.

  • In a large saucepan, melt butter and add in black pepper over medium heat.

  • Lower heat to medium-low and whisk in 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons flour, stirring constantly for 3 minutes.

  • Slowly add in pan drippings, about 1 cup at a time, whisking constantly to keep the flour from clumping.

  • Continue to whisk after adding all the liquid until the gravy starts to bubble and thicken (about 2-3 minutes).

  • Use gravy immediately, or keep warm on stove top and stir well before serving.

Notes

  • To make this gravy, you are going to need about 4 cups of drippings. If you do not have four cups, add enough chicken stock or broth to make 4 cups.

I love this recipe! So simple! We have a gluten sensitivity in our family. Can you substitute gluten free flour here without changing the consistency?

Cooking for too little time: As the gravy cooks, it slowly thickens, so if you don't allow it to cook long enough, it will be too thin. Why is my turkey gravy too thick? ›

When it's hot, gravy should be thick enough to just coat the back of a spoon, but not so thick that it sticks to the spoon like glue. If your gravy is hot and still too thick, add broth a little at a time to thin it out. Remember to check the seasoning when you're done and adjust if needed.
