Turmeric golden paste has many health benefits for dogs. Turmeric has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties in it, which makes it s a great way to support the prevention of:
- Arthritis
- Cancer and Tumors
- Chronic Inflammation

- Skin Irritations and Wounds
Benefits of Turmeric for Dogs
There has been much scientific research on the spice turmeric since it has been used as a natural supplement and in herbal remedies for centuries. Lots of health and therapeutic benefits of turmeric have been found for dogs. These are a few of them:
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: Turmeric contains curcumin, which has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects in dogs. This can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia.
- Antioxidant Properties: Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, which can help protect your dog’s cells from damage caused by free radicals.
- Improved Digestion: Turmeric can help improve digestion by increasing the production of bile and promoting healthy gut bacteria. It can also help to improve your dog’s overall digestive health and combat IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease).
- Liver Support: Turmeric has a protective effect on the liver, which can help support liver function and detoxification.
- Coat and Skin Health: Turmeric can help with improving your dog’s skin and coat health, by reducing inflammation and promoting the growth of new, healthy cells.
- Cancer Prevention: Turmeric has anti-cancer properties, which may help prevent or slow the growth of certain types of cancer cells and tumors in dogs.
- Improved Brain Function: Turmeric has a positive effect on brain function in dogs, by reducing inflammation and promoting the growth of new brain cells.
Important Notes
While golden paste can have a positive effect on dogs, there are also instances of adverse reactions and negative side effects. Be aware of these risks and always give your dog only the recommended amounts.
Some side effects are bruising, clotting issues, gallbladder problems, loose stool, or upset stomach. These can be severe if given too high of a dosage.
You should not give golden paste to your dog if your dog has gallbladder stones or bile duct obstruction.
Because turmeric is a natural blood thinner, you should not give it to a dog that is on blood thinners or has thin blood.
Golden Paste may cause dogs to smell like cat pee at first but it will eventually go away. You can eliminate or reduce the smell by adding up to 1 tablespoon of Ceylon cinnamon.
Watch for any signs of an allergic reaction when first giving golden paste to your dog. While this is rare, it can still occur.
Always have a thorough discussion with your vet about giving golden paste or any nutritional supplement to your dog.
Why You’ll Love This Golden Paste for Dogs Recipe
This recipe only has four ingredients, so it’s incredibly easy to make. Plus, you can make a bunch of easy variations for flavors dogs love.
Since it is such an easy recipe, have fun with it and add more healthy spices to the paste mixture.
Ingredients
All of the ingredients can be found at regular grocery stores. The exact amounts are in the recipe card below.
- Turmeric Powder is the main ingredient; it packs a punch with a host of health benefits.
- Water is for mixing with the turmeric powder to make the paste.
- Coconut Oil is a healthy fat that makes the liver metabolize the curcumin slower so there is better absorption of curcumin.
- Black Pepper has piperine which increases the bioavailability of curcumin and makes it easier for your dog’s body to absorb it.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
It is important to use freshly ground black pepper. Do not use pre-ground pepper because the active ingredient (piperine) is oxidized and degraded when exposed to light and air.
It is best to use coconut oil because it is a healthy oil that also has anti-inflammatory properties and is known as a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal remedy. If you don’t have coconut oil, you can use olive oil (virgin).
Use organic ingredients if you want to make organic golden paste.
Equipment Needed
- Measuring Cup
- Measuring Spoons
- Whisk or Spoon
- Saucepan or Skillet
- Glass Jar with Lid – I used a mason jar with a wood lid.
Important Note: Turmeric stains just about everything and it is very difficult to get the stain out of wooden spoons, other surfaces, or fabrics. Be selective with what tools and equipment you use to make it, the container you store it in, and the linens you use to clean up after making Golden Paste.
How to Make Golden Paste for Dogs
Here are the steps and photos for making golden paste for dogs:
- Place the turmeric powder and 1 cup water in a skillet or small saucepan.
- Bring it to a boil over medium heat, then simmer it over low heat until it becomes a thick paste. Stir the mixture occasionally while it is simmering.
- Remove it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes, so that it is still warm but not hot.
- Add the coconut oil and pepper.
- Stir until it’s all combined.
- Let it cool to room temperature.
- Transfer it to an airtight container. A glass jar is best because turmeric will stain plastic.
Recipe Variations
- Golden Paste with Bone Broth – substitute the water with dog-friendly bone broth or beef broth.
- Golden Paste with Ginger – add up to 1 tablespoon of ground ginger at the same time you are adding the pepper.
- Golden Paste with Cinnamon – add up to 1 tablespoon of Ceylon cinnamon at the same time you are adding the pepper. Do not use cassia cinnamon. And yes, it is safe for dogs to eat a small amount of cinnamon.
Golden Paste Dosage for Dogs
So how much golden paste should you give your dog? And how often?
The recommended dosage for dogs is ¼ teaspoon of golden paste for 10 pounds of body weight. This dosage is once per day (daily). Divide the amount in half for giving it twice a day.
Here’s a handy guide:
Dog Size | Dog Weight | Daily Dosage |
---|---|---|
Small | Up to 20 pounds | ¼ teaspoon |
Medium | 21 to 50 pounds | ½ teaspoon |
Large | 51 to 80 pounds | ¾ teaspoon |
Giant | Over 80 pounds | 1 teaspoon |
Always start with a small dosage (half or less of the recommended amount). Golden Paste can cause loose stools or diarrhea if you start with too much.
Golden Milk for Dogs
If you’ve heard about people drinking golden milk and wonder if you can make it for dogs too? Well, you can! It’s super simple too.
Ingredients
- ½ cup of Goat Milk or Plain Unsweetened Oat Milk (don’t use cow’s milk)
- ¼ teaspoon of Golden Paste
Recipe Steps
- Heat the milk to warm. Don’t get it too hot.
- Add the golden paste and stir it in.
- Pour it into a small bowl or over your dog’s food.
How to Store
Store golden paste in a glass jar because it will stain plastic. Refrigerate it for up to 2 weeks.
For longer storage, you can freeze it for up to 4 months. Use an ice cube tray that makes small or mini ice cubes or a silicone mold. Once it’s frozen, transfer the cubes to a plastic freezer bag and store it in the freezer. Then you can take out as many cubes as you’ll need for a few days and thaw them in the refrigerator overnight.
How long does golden paste last?
Golden paste lasts up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator or up to 4 months in the freezer.
Can people have golden paste?
Yes, absolutely! Golden paste was originally made for people. Some folks add a little honey as a sweetener (but dogs don’t need the added sugar).
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for golden paste to work in dogs?
It usually takes 7 to 10 days to see any effects of golden paste in dogs.
What does golden paste do for dogs?
There are many golden paste uses for dogs. It’s used for treating arthritis, inflammation, joint pain, cancer, skin irritations, and more.
Is golden paste dangerous for dogs?
Golden paste can be dangerous to dogs with gallbladder stones or bile duct obstruction because curcumin makes the gallbladder contract. It can affect blood sugar levels and should be used with caution with diabetic dogs. Too much golden paste can also cause adverse reactions such as clotting issues because turmeric is a natural blood thinner, loose stool, and diarrhea.
