Peanut and Tree Nut Free

Many puppy-friendly recipes out there make use of nut butters, but this dog birthday cake recipe is made without peanut butter is safe for homes with peanut and tree nut allergies. There are two ingredients you can choose to use in this adorable cake:

  • Sun Butter: Sun butter is made from sunflower seeds and is a popular product for humans who deal with nut allergies. It tastes exactly like sunflower seeds processed into a creamy spread. Your puppy will love it.
  • Pumpkin Puree: Pumpkin is another dog-friendly ingredient that you'll find in many recipes for treats and cakes. If you choose to use pumpkin, you'll cook it down in a saucepan to remove moisture and thicken it up before adding it to the cake batter.

Dog Friendly Ingredients

When fed in appropriate serving sizes, this birthday cake is a safe indulgent for your baby. The ingredients you'll need are:

  • Egg: This will add structure to the cake and is easy on dog tummies.
  • Oil: While dogs should not consume oil in large amounts - especially those prone to pancreatitis, the small amounts in each individual serving of this cake won't cause any upset in the vast majority of pooches.
  • Vanilla Extract: Tasty in people and doggy cakes alike.
  • Honey or Maple Syrup: These ingredients are used as a more natural sweetener than processed sugar.
  • Shredded Carrots: I like to pulse them in a food processor to get them nice and small. Carrots add nutritional value and additional natural sweetness.
  • Whole Wheat Flour: A wholesome and nutritious flour perfect for dog-friendly recipes.
  • Baking Soda: To help things rise!
  • Frosting: You can use plain Greek yogurt mixed with more sun butter OR you can use a half cup of plain mashed potatoes.
  • Decorations: I used whole and crushed up mini Milk Bones to decorate my cake. You can use any kind of dog treats or a very small amount of sprinkles.

Serving Size Matters

This recipe makes one 6-inch cake. A human wouldn't eat a cake of that size in one sitting, so your puppy baby can't handle that much either. Ideal for sharing, this cake is meant to be cut into small slices to be enjoyed as a treat in addition to your pup's regular meals.

You know your dog's nutritional needs based on their size and breed, so choose a treat size appropriate for your individual pooch.

How To Store Leftovers

Since this cake will be served in small servings, what do you do with all of the leftovers? Wrap the cake in plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge for safekeeping. I like to cut my doggo, Dewey, a slice about 20 minutes before I actually give it to him. I let the slice sit on the counter for about 20 minutes to take the chill off of it, and then he gobbles it right up. Consume the leftovers within 5 days for best quality.

You can also freeze leftover cake by wrapping it in plastic - whole or by the slice - and freezing in a zip-top freezer bag. Just let it thaw on the counter when ready to use.

Why is the Cake Green?

When you bake using sun butter, the The chlorophyll in sunflower seeds reacts with the baking soda when baked, causing the green color of the cake when it cools. This is completely normal and harmless. Just think of it as a natural food coloring!

So, since your doggo has been sitting beside you this whole time while drooling at the pictures in this post, get into the kitchen, follow the dog birthday cake recipe without peanut butter found in its entirety below, and throw yourself a fur-brained par-tay!
